Yesterday’s wet and windy conditions proved tricky for many of the Championship favourites. Ernie Els and Vijay Singh carded rounds of 10-over-par 80, while two-time Masters champion Phil Mickelson fared only one shot better.
The weather improved slightly later in the day, which Graeme McDowell and Rocco Mediate used to their advantage to birdie the final two holes to finish the day joint level at the top of the scoreboard on one under 69.
Australian Robert Allenby holed four birdies on the back nine to come home in 32 to join Scottish Open winner McDowell and US Open runner-up Mediate at the top of the leader board. Greg Norman and Adam Scott lie one shot adrift after going around in par 70s, the same score as American Bart Bryant.
Elsewhere, Harrington fans would have been pleased to see the defending champion showing little strain from his wrist injury to finish four over.
Former champion Sandy Lyle quit the tournament after 10 holes and said he’ll watch the rest of the Open on TV.
